Missions flown by the Bond
Crew
- March 29,
1944, 8th AF Operation 284 - 381st Mission number 88. Targets:
Brunswick, Germany, Crossbow Installation, and Targets of Opportunity.
193 B-17's, including the Bond crew, bombed industrial targets
in the Brunswick area using the Pathfinder technique. Pathfinders
were special Radar equipped aircraft which allowed the Allies
to bomb in bad weather.
- April 8,
1944, 8th AF Operation 291 - 381st Mission number 89. Targets:
Brunswick, Germany, Airfields in Germany, Targets of Opportunity.
The Bond crew was part of Force II attacking airfields. 59 B-17s
attacked the Oldenburg Airfield - an operational base for single-engine
fighters. Notably, the crew was forced to complete a belly landing
back at Ridgewell after an electrical failure on the return leg
of the mission.
- April 10,
1944, 8th AF Operation 295 - 381st Mission number 90. Targets:
Airfields and Aircraft, Factories in Belgium and France, Crossbow
Installation. The Bond crew was part of 212 B-17's that attacked
three aircraft works and airfield sites in the Brussels area.
- April 18,
1944, 8th AF Operation 306 - 381st Mission number 93. Target:
the Heinekel Bomber aircraft components works at Oranienburg,
Germany. No further details pending arrival of the Tactical Mission
Summary.
- April 19,
1944, 8th AF Operation 308 - 381st Mission number 94. Targets:
Kassel, Germany, Airfields in Germany, Targets of Opportunity,
Crossbow Installation, Batten. The Bond crew was part of 56 B-17's
of Force I that attacked the Eschwege Airfield. On this mission,
the crew was shot down. Seven men, including Ed Brumback, were
killed from the Bond crew. Co-pilot Wilbur Mason and the Engineer/Top
Turret gunner Neal Clyman survived. Four other B-17's were shot
down from the same formation and were the only Bomber losses of
Operation 308.
